40 YEARS

Started by: mollie m (7161)

As of this date, and the “day” tomorrow (Monday) I will have completed working 40 years at the company I still work for, albeit just part time now since I turned 60.

It was 15 October 1983 when I started this job, following years of being a Civil Servant with the MoD, and I have enjoyed the work and the people for the last 40 years, and there have been many changes in that time. Some have sadly died, others have gone on to start their own businesses successfully.

I’m not sure how many people have achieved something like this, but I doubt many women have worked for so long constantly for one place, although I’m sure I’m not the only one.

How long have you, or did, work for the same company?

I’ve just completed my 42nd year at the same company. Granted, I’m not a woman and the company belongs to me, but I should get the orange before you!

Well done to you Mollie ,I hope they appreciate you Mollie , 40 years of your live to help their company make profit, In a fair world they should see you are comfortable and the very least install central heating for you, They will find it very hard to replace you as well today, The yoof of today want instant gratification with holidays, paid sick leave and paid lunch breaks,,

well done Mollie
the only down side to staying with the company is that your salary and position may become stagnant. But when you move employers every 5 years you have more chance of negotiating a higher salary and position but still an achievement !

I do not agree with people working well over thier alloted years they do not understand they are stopping the younger generation of a chance of employment ,if one can't retire gracefully after 4o years it's time to go !!!!!

Thanks for your thoughts and comments everyone. Very kind of you.

I had a nice day and was bought some lovely things.

It's all well and good saying retire when your time is due, but in my case, I have three reasons for continuing.

1) I live alone and have no kids so I'd be bored to tears
2) I can't afford to stop working as I couldn't live on my
pension
3) I enjoy my work and, it's true that I may be holding
up a younger person but, with the greatest respect, I
am the only one in the company who has a good
command of spelling and English grammar. Most
kids today have no idea of those skills as they're so
used to text speak, or relying on their computers to
do that job for them. Even one of my bosses had to
to ask me how to use an apostrophe!

So, as long as I'm able, I will continue to work.

Well done, Mollie.
Its great to hear that you are still proactive and enjoying it.
I would imagine its very therapeutic and satisfying for you, given the reasons stated above.

On about holding up the younger people seeking work, it should be pointed out that at the moment there is a labour shortage, and the government is encouraging older people to keep on working, or even come out of retirement and start working again.

I was in Asda this morning, and I noticed that there were no young people employed there, the management seemed to be the youngest, and they were in their 30s, maybe some in their late 20s, with the rest of the store staff going from their 30s to I would say into their 70s.

If you shop at Asda in the self service tills area and scan and go, just take note of the age of the staff who assist in those positions, and those positions are proper front line, dealing with security and what not, I don't think any of them were under 50, and some were a lot older than that.

As they say, many a good tune is played on an owd fiddle.

So Mollie is not on her own in carrying on working

I wish that I could recall which movie had the line about retirement being the main cause of death in old people.

Anyone?

Godfather/Reservoir Dogs/Pulp Fiction? It was something of that ilk.

Damned ageing: memory not what it used to be!

PS it is not strictly true, in that it differs between men and women, age of retirement and whether you did a knowledge based or manual activity. So it is true for some individuals.
